The Windows Store isn’t exactly known for being a robust app marketplace, and Microsoft knows it. The company is always looking for new ways to attract developers to the platform. In the past, Microsoft made tools designed to port iOS and Android apps to Windows, and created the Universal app system that puts all Windows apps on the same platform. Now, Microsoft has updated its App Studio to allow users to create, prototype and submit an app for release from the comfort of a web browser — without installing Visual Studio or writing a single line of code. It works, too: I just created a functional Windows 10 app in less than ten minutes.
Windows App Studio’s no-code tools probably can’t help you create a visually stunning or unique experience, but it can definitely churn out a functional application in fairly short order. New projects have a choice of a few basic templates, but most of them either amount to simply displaying a webpage within an app (boring) to an experience comprised of various à la carte sections — mostly RSS feeds, or API curations from services like YouTube, Flickr, Bing, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. You can also create your own sections by inserting some HTML, but that kind of ruins the no-code point of entry.
My app is about as simple as it gets: an “updates” app that tracks my personal social activity across my personal blog and YouTube channel — calling on a Tumblr RSS feed and YouTube’s browser API, respectively. I can’t say it’s more efficient than simply checking my Twitter page for updates but it’s a real, functional Windows 10 app that’s running on my PC right now. I’ve never even dreamed of making an app before, but the App Studio walked me through every step of the process. It was shockingly easy.
Windows App Studio probably isn’t going to help you create an application or game that you can build a business around, but it’s definitely good enough for make a simple companion app for a website, business or brand. Best of all, the end product is a Universal app capable of running on Windows Phones, tablets, desktop machines, laptops and even Rasberry Pi 2 and IoT devices. Want to see more? Check out Microsoft’s official announcement (and the project’s GitHub page) at the source link below.
You may have heard that the Windows Store has a serious problem with counterfeit apps; for every legitimate title, there’s seemingly a horde of fakes meant solely to take your money and run. At last, though, Microsoft has detailed what it’s doing to cull these scams from its shop. To begin with, it recently toughened up the requirements so that app categories, icons and names reflect what you’re really getting; hopefully, you’ll see less junk going forward. The folks in Redmond are also scouring the existing catalog, and have pulled 1,500 apps so far. There’s still a long way to go (search for “iTunes” and you’ll see plenty of copyright abuse), but this represents a good start.
For some, the biggest solution may be what Microsoft isn’t doing — namely, paying developers for every app they publish. A promotion the company ran last year gave $100 per finished app no matter how much work was involved, which actually punished those who took the time to write top-notch software. The strategy suggested to some that Microsoft was obsessed with catching up to the quantities of apps in Apple’s App Store or Google Play, quality be damned. Both the crackdown and the end to those pay-per-app promos should go a long way toward changing this reputation, but it will only be successful when you can safely assume that most Windows Store apps are the real deal.
Crafting a seriously great app experience for one device is hard enough, but these days developers have plenty of form factors to tackle. Microsoft is trying to ease their suffering a bit with the introduction of universal Windows apps, which just took the stage at the company’s Build conference in San Francisco. Long story short, you’d theoretically only have to write an app in Visual Studio once. Most of the code (in the language of your choosing, Microsoft insists) remains the same, but that universal app will take on a different appearance depending on what device it’s running on. Well, if you want it to, anyway. Naturally, developers can fine-tune the finished product too, so the experience of using the app on Windows Phone feels as polished as it does on a PC. You’d be forgiven for thinking this is a bit on the dry side, but this is a big deal — Microsoft is trying to break down the app barrier so devs can make more consistently good apps for us faster.
The failure of Batman: Arkham Knight’s PC port is finally complete — after being removed from digital stores for being completely broken at launch, going through a four month overhaul and returning with too many lingering issues to forgive, Warner Bros. has finally thrown in the towel. If you bought the game on PC, you’re eligible for a refund between now and the end of the year.
Warner Bros. spelled out the details on the game’s Steam community page. It’s pretty straightforward, save for one exception: the Arkham Knight season pass is only eligible for a refund with the main game, you can’t return the DLC separately. Not all versions of the game seem eligible for a refund, either — users who purchased a retail copy of the game are reporting that the refund page won’t load for them.
Users that choose not to (or aren’t able to) take the refund are also being promised that Warner Bros. will continue to work on the game, but carefully notes that it may not be able to fix some issues. That’s not promising. Unless you’re one of the lucky few PC gamers for whom this title runs well, you should probably just get a refund.
If you’ve been holding off from buyingBatman: Arkham Knight for Windows due to reports of numerous performance issues, low quality textures and glitches, its publisher Warner Brother Games agrees. That’s why it’s pulling the game from sale “while we work to address these issues to satisfy our quality standards.” If you’ve already purchased it you can still play, but in a forum post the team mentioned people can go to Steam or retail locations where they purchased the game for a refund. A couple of days ago, Warner made some suggestions on how users could get the game to run better, but those don’t seem to help much. Right now, the game is showing a “Mostly Negative” review status on Steam with 8,700 reviews logged — while it’s certainly not the first bad PC port, hopefully this embarrassing episode will make it one of the last. (We can hope, right?)
We want to apologize to those of you who are experiencing performance issues with Batman: Arkham Knight on PC. We take these issues very seriously and have therefore decided to suspend future game sales of the PC version while we work to address these issues to satisfy our quality standards. We greatly value our customers and know that while there are a significant amount of players who are enjoying the game on PC, we want to do whatever we can to make the experience better for PC players overall.
Thank you to those players who have already given valuable feedback. We are continuously monitoring all threads posted in the Official Batman: Arkham Knight Community and Steam forums, as well as any issues logged with our Customer Support (support.wbgames.com). If you purchased your copy of the game and are not satisfied with your experience, then we ask for your patience while these issues are resolved. If desired, you can request a refund at help.steampowered.com (Steam refund policies can be found here: http://store.steampowered.com/steam_refunds) or the retail location where you purchased the game.
The Batman: Arkham fans have continually supported the franchise to its current height of success, and we want to thank you for your patience as we work to deliver an updated version of Batman: Arkham Knight on PC so you can all enjoy the final chapter of the Batman: Arkham series as it was meant to be played.
Warner Bros. removed Batman: Arkham Knight from Steam in June because that version of the game was essentially too broken to function. Today, it re-launched Arkham Knight on Steam, though some players are still experiencing problems. In an effort to address these issues, Warner Bros. posted an update with a few suggestions for specific problems: Windows 7 players may encounter hard-drive paging issues after “extended gameplay sessions,” but “re-launching the game will resolve” that. For Windows 10 players, Warner Bros. says, “having at least 12GB of system RAM on a PC allows the game to operate without paging and provides a smoother gameplay experience.” It should be noted that 12GB of RAM would provide a smoother gameplay experience for just about every game in existence. The studio is also looking into stabilizing the experiences on specific graphics cards.
It’s a shame that Arkham Knight is unplayable for a number of fans because it’s a pretty great experience on consoles. For the Steam re-launch, Warner Bros. includes free copies of Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY, Batman: Arkham City GOTY, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate to anyone who previously purchased Arkham Knight. You can also score these games for free if you buy Arkham Knight on Steam — it’s $50, by the way — before November 16th.
Snapchat has its Stories, Twitter has moments and, as of Halloween, Instagram has ‘Best Videos.’ It’s not the catchiest name in the world, but it delivers. The feature launched with a curated collection of holiday-themed Instagram videos all bundled under a simple headline: “Watch Halloween’s best videos.” Clicking it presents you with a continuous stream of trick-or-treating, singing, scaring and, of course, Thriller dance-offs.
Truth be told, the ad-hoc video channel is pretty fun — videos play automatically, but can be skipped or replayed with a simple up/down swipe. The content is pretty engaging too, despite being in 15-second bites. There’s a little bit of everything here: dogs dressed as Stormtroopers, video-editing assisted Halloween magic tricks, creepy astronauts and even Miley Cyrus singing “Ghostbusters.”
The feature went live at about 1pm on Halloween, but according to WIRED, Instagram continued adding videos to it for about 24-hours — allowing users to submit their video to the curation team by tagging them with #IGHalloween. The holiday seems to be serving as a trial run for the feature, which will later be used for other holidays, news events and festivals.
